Walter E. Sandvig

Walter E. Sandvig, age 99, of Glenwood, died Monday, March 2, 2020, at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. Funeral services for Walter will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 7th, at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood, with Rev. David Wallin officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. on Friday and will resume on Saturday morning, one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.

Walter Ernest Sandvig, the third child of Ellert and Clara (Gilbertson) Sandvig, was born at home on December 22, 1920. At the time of Walter’s birth his family resided in Gilchrist Township, Pope County, Minnesota. The family later moved to Lake Johanna Township. Walter was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended country school. He married Charmaine Schluter on January 3, 1948 at Glenwood Lutheran Church. They made their home in Glenwood. Walter was employed at Starbuck Cement Products and Gloege Chevrolet in Glenwood. In his later years he helped Charmaine with her in home daycare.

Walter and Charmaine shared 41 years of marriage before her death on April 19, 1989. Walter continued to live in his own home until 2013, when he moved to Parkview Court where his niece, Pam worked. He enjoyed seeing Pam every day and receiving a smile from her. When he needed additional assistance with his daily care Walter moved to Glenwood Retirement Village, where he lived until the time of his death.

Walter is survived by his sisters-in-law: Delores Aaberg, Evelyn Schluter, Miriam Schluter, Sharon Schluter, and Beverly Olson; brothers-in-law, Clayton Olson, Arnold Schluter and Lyle Schluter; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellert and Clara; his wife, Charmaine; his father and mother-in-law, Wilhelm and Clara Schluter; his sister, Mavis Fetsch Kullman; his brother, Harland Sandvig; brothers-in-law, Arthur Aaberg, Melvin Edmunds, Russell Schluter and Arden Schluter; and sisters-in-law, Violet Edmunds, Blanche Schluter, Kay Schluter and Mary Schluter.
