He was the fifth of 12 children born to John P. and Margaret Gladys (Zirbes) Steinhofer, Sr. Tim grew up in St. Cloud and was a 1971 graduate of Apollo High School. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and while living in St. Cloud he worshiped with his family at St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

After high school, Tim enlisted in the United States Army. He served for 18 years before his honorable discharge. During that time he was stationed in Korea and other countries as well as in the U.S. After his military career, he returned to St. Cloud where he worked doing concrete construction. He moved to South Dakota for a number of years before settling in Brooten in 2006. In addition to his concrete work, he also worked at WASP (now FAST Global Solutions) in Glenwood for five years.

When Tim was young, he spent a lot of time at a home his parents owned on Grove Lake, not far from Brooten, and visiting other extended family in the area. During those years he made many friends. Almost immediately after his move to Brooten, Tim became reacquainted with one of his childhood friends, Cindy (Van Meveren) Morrison. The two soon became a couple and happily made their home together for the next 16 years.
