Marlys Weispfennig Obituary

Marlys J. Weispfennig, age 85 of Glenwood, died Friday, December 24, 2021 at the Glenwood Retirement Village. Private family services will be held and burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Villard. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Marlys Joan Polzine, the daughter of Elmer and Leta (Kostman) Polzine, was born April 6, 1936 in the family car enroute to the hospital near Rock Rapids Iowa. She and her family lived on a farm in Iowa until 1942 when they moved to the Villard, MN area. Marlys attended Villard public school where she was active in band and choir. She was a 1955 graduate of Villard High School.

On August 20, 1955 Marlys was united in marriage to Freddie A. Weispfennig at St John's Lutheran Church in Villard. After their marriage the couple made their home on the Weispfennig family farm near Glenwood, where they raised their three children, Diane, Deb, and Edward.

Marlys worked as a cook at Glenwood High School for many years. She enjoyed cooking and was a gracious hostess, known for inviting people to enjoy a meal at the family home. Her hobbies included drawing, scrapbooking, cross-stitching, sewing and gardening. As a couple, Marlys and Freddie enjoyed traveling and visited many states, including Alaska, which was their “dream trip”.

Marlys will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who took great pride in her family. She especially enjoyed being involved in the lives of her grandkids and great-grandkids, never missing any of their activities or milestones.

Marlys was an active member at St John's Lutheran Church, where she participated in Ladies Aid, Altar Guild and the Church Choir. She also made many of the church banners, including the Centennial banner, which still hangs at the church and cross-stitched baptismal clothes for many years. She had a deep faith in Christ, which helped sustain her through many health struggles. She passed away at Glenwood Retirement Village on Christmas Eve 2021, just in time to celebrate Christmas in heaven.

Marlys is survived by her husband of 66 years, Freddie; two daughters, Diane (Kevin) O’Donnell of Richfield and Deb (Jeff) Budzisz of Bloomington; one son, Edward ( Marvelle) Weispfennig of Glenwood; two grandchildren, Callen (Alysia) and Brady (Melissa) Weispfennig; and two great-grandchildren, Liam and Adalyn Weispfennig; one sister, Barb Fegan of Buda, TX; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Leta Polzine; sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Lawrence Walker; and brother-in-law, David Fegan.

Memorials may be sent to Glacial Ridge Hospice, 219 1st St SE, Glenwood MN 56334 or St John's Lutheran Church, P O Box 36, Villard MN 56385.
