Obituary

Marlin J. Schmid, age 87, of Brooten, and formerly of Brooklyn Center/the Minneapolis area, died on Wednesday, May 13, 2020, at CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre. A Memorial Service for Marlin will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 13, 2020, at Discover Church in Brooklyn Park, MN, with Pastor Richard Erickson officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:30 A.M. and run until the time of service. Inurnment will be in Fort Snelling Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.

Marlin John Schmid, son of Walter and Dorothy (Perl) Schmid, was born on March 16, 1933 in Elkton, South Dakota. He grew up on a nearby farm with his three brothers, James, Gene, and Gerald. Marlin attended Elkton public schools and the United Parish Church. He graduated from high school in 1951. In 1953, at the age of twenty, Marlin enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Japan until his honorable discharge in 1955.

After his discharge, Marlin visited his brother, Gene, in Pipestone, MN, at the Gamble’s store where Gene worked. It was there that he met Patricia Lund. The two began dating and were united in marriage on January 16, 1957, in Pipestone. In the spring of 1958, Marlin attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis, MN, where he earned a degree in Accounting. Marlin and Pat settled in Brooklyn Center, where they raised their two sons, Alan and Daniel. Marlin worked for Packaging Corporation of America in Golden Valley for 32 years until his retirement. Marlin and Pat were members of Discover Church in Brooklyn Park.  They recently moved to Brooten, where they have since resided.

Marlin enjoyed fishing and playing card with his family. He especially loved watching sports. Marlin and Pat enjoyed 63 years of marriage before his death on May 13, 2020. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Marlin is survived by his wife, Patricia of Brooten; their sons, Alan (Cheryl) Schmid of Savage and Daniel (Heather) Schmid of Brooklyn Park; five grandchildren, Jessica (Dana) Penkivech, Andrew (Amanda) Schmid, Emily (Ben) Kirkwold, Grace (R.J.) Pfeifer, and Ginny Schmid; 7 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gerald “Jerry” (Eva) Schmid; a sister-in-law, Betty Schmid; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Dorothy; two brothers, James and Gene; sister-in-law, Shirley Schmid; and two nephews, Bryan and Sidney Schmid.
