Dorothy Bartos Obituary

Dorothy M. Bartos, age 89 of Glenwood, died Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Alomere Hospital in Alexandria. Due to the government restrictions regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, no public services will be held at this time. A private graveside service will be held at the Bohemian Independent Cemetery in Lake Mary Township, Douglas County, Minnesota. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Dorothy Marie Zavadil, daughter of Joseph and Christine (Benesh) Zavadil, was born at home in Hudson Twp., Douglas Co., MN, on October 29, 1930, along with her twin sister, Gladys. Her early years were spent on the family farm with her three sisters. She attended District 21 country school through the 8th grade and she and her family were members of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church near Lowry. When Dorothy was a teenager her family moved to Alexandria. Dorothy worked for a time as a waitress at the Traveler’s Inn before she met her future husband, Oliver James Bartos. The two were united in marriage on October 10, 1950 at St. Mary's Church in Alexandria. Dorothy and Oliver made their home on the Bartos family farm in Reno Township, where they raised their two daughters, Kathy and Sherri. Dorothy enjoyed farm life and was a hard worker, both inside and outside the home. She was known to be a perfectionist and it showed in her tidy house and well maintained flower and vegetable gardens along with her large yard. Following Oliver’s retirement in 1998, the two purchased a home in Glenwood where Dorothy went to work planting flowers and beautifying the yard. Oliver passed away in 2007, just after the couple celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.

Dorothy’s talents also extended into the kitchen, where she excelled at baking delicious treats, including kolaches, and cooking all of her family’s favorite Czech ethnic dishes. She was a gracious hostess and her home was often where family would gather to celebrate holidays. She was known to be fond of birds and for incorporating them into her home décor. In their younger years Dorothy and Oliver enjoyed dancing and socializing with their neighbors. After their retirement, they found the time to travel, taking leisurely road trips to various parts of the U.S., usually with family. They were longtime members of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church until their move to Glenwood, when they started attending Sacred Heart Church.

Dorothy passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 14, 2020, at Alomere Hospital in Alexandria, at the age of 89. Her family will remember her as a humble, kind, caring and hardworking wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Dorothy is survived by her two daughters, Kathy (David) Sibell of Glenwood and Sherri (Rick) Faehnrich of Lowry; three grandchildren, Neil Sibell, Scott (Jenny) Faehnrich and Sarah (Jordan) Riley; one (soon to be two) great-grandchildren, Riley Faehnrich and baby boy Riley; one sister, Janice Scheflo; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oliver; two sisters and their husbands, Gladys (and Gordon) Skramstad and Betty (and Grant) Skramstad; brother-in-law, Mel Scheflo; and a nephew, Bradley Skramstad.
