Donald K. Grundseth

Donald K. Grundseth, age 80 of rural Glenwood, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family, on Monday, April 4, 2022. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 8th at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Glenwood. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery in Glenwood. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. 

Donald Keith Grundseth was born on January 14, 1942, Lake Johanna Township, Pope County, MN. He was the second of six children born to parents, Orvin and Ione (Iverson) Grundseth. He grew up on the family farm in Lake Johanna Township and was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Brooten. He attended country school in District #4 before graduating from Brooten High School. On February 25, 1964, he enlisted in the United States Army. While in the military he received training as a mechanic. Following his honorable discharge on February 24, 1966, he returned to the Brooten area where he farmed in partnership with his brother, Kenny, for close to 60 years.

On November 29, 1974, Donald was united in marriage to Lorraine Beane in Milbank, South Dakota. Lorraine, a registered nurse, was also a veteran of the United States Army. Donald and Lorraine did not have any children of their own, but Lorraine was the mother of three children who eventually blessed the couple with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For the next 25 years, Donald and Lorraine made their home on Lake Gilchrist, before Lorraine’s death on November 8, 1999 just days shy of the couple’s 25th wedding anniversary. Donald continued to reside in their home until 2017, when it was destroyed by fire. For the next several years he resided in Alexandria with Lorraine’s granddaughter, Katie, whom he and Lorraine had raised. Katie eventually purchased a home near Lake Gilchrist and it was there that Donald died peacefully on April 4, 2022, with Katie and her children, DeKotah and Destini, by his side.

Donald loved to listen to music, play guitar, fish, hunt, watch birds, plant flowers, and spend time with Katie and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Donald was blessed with a happy outlook. He was good-natured, kind, patient and someone with a strong work ethic. He will be missed very much.

Donald is survived by his step-granddaughter, Katie Braun of Glenwood, whom he and Lorraine raised as a daughter; step-daughter, Jeralyn Braun; step-son, Charlee (Cindi) Braun of St. Paul; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carol (Ron Isdahl) Halls of Brooten, Judith (Errol) Bluhm of Willmar, and Arlene Olson of Wilmar; two brothers, Kenneth (Karin Skarpness) Grundseth of Brooten and James Grundseth of Rapid City, SD, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Orvin and Ione Grundseth; his wife, Lorraine Grundseth; step-daughter, Jacquie Braun; brother-in-law, Robert Halls; nephew, Jamie Grundseth; niece, Susan Bluhm; and cousins, Bruce and John Grundseth.
