Derrick Johnson Obituary

Derrick J. Johnson, age 40, of Glenwood, MN died as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, near Sedan. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 15th at Glenwood Lutheran Church in Glenwood. The service will be livestreamed on the church's website glenwoodlutheran.com. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 14th from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home in Glenwood and will continue Thursday at the church, one hour prior to the service. Derrick's final act of kindness was to give the gift of life through organ and tissue donation. In lieu of flowers, the family has set up an account for Derrick's children, Addisen and Jaxon at Glenwood State Bank. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Derrick Jay Johnson was born April 28, 1982, in Alexandria, MN to Gary and Dianne (Gunderson) Johnson. He was welcomed home by his three siblings, Chris, Jeremy and Heather. Derrick grew up in Hoffman, where he attended Messiah Lutheran Church and West Central Area Schools. Derrick was involved in Boy Scouts and received his Eagle Scout Award in 2000. After graduating from high school in 2001, he attended Alexandria Technical School in Alexandria before going to work as a mechanic for Brownie’s Tire in Glenwood. Derrick later worked at Marthaler Chevrolet in Glenwood, Certified Auto Plaza in Alexandria, and for the year and a half before his death, he was employed at Valu Ford in Morris.

On December 16, 2006, Derrick was united in marriage to Kim Dawn Suckstorff at Glenwood Lutheran Church. They made their home in Glenwood and were blessed with two children, Jaxon and Addisen.

Derrick was a member of the Lakes Area HOG Group and Glenwood Lutheran Church. He was a loving husband to Kim and father to Jaxon and Addisen. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, a hobby that he and Kim shared. He also enjoyed doing activities with his kids and spending time with family and friends.

Derrick died on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident near Sedan. He will be greatly missed.

Derrick is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Kim of Glenwood; their children, Jaxon and Addisen, both still at home; his parents, Gary and Diane Johnson of Hoffman; his siblings, Chris (Kelly Kraemer) Johnson of Starbuck, Jeremy (Leah Gustafson) Johnson of Mounds View, and Heather Johnson of Elbow Lake; his maternal grandmother, Donna Gunderson of Alexandria; his wife’s parents, Jim and Mavis Suckstorff of Glenwood; his wife’s brother, Paul (Ashley) Suckstorff of Scottsdale, AZ; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Chester and Alice Johnson; his maternal grandfather, Harvey Gunderson; and an aunt, Ellen Youngberg.
