David Gisle Troen was born on June 15, 1929 in Starbuck, MN. He was the first of three children born to parents Magnus and Martha (Bagne) Troen. He grew up on a farm in Minnewaska Township and was a member of Indherred Church, where he was baptized in 1929 and confirmed in 1944 by Pastor G.O. Forde. David attended elementary school at District #33 near the Troen farm and high school in Glenwood, graduating with the class of 1948. While in school he was active in varsity baseball and was captain of the Laker baseball team his senior year, as well as Senior Class Treasurer. After graduation, David attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa for a year before returning home to help his father on the farm. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 4, 1955 and served for just under two years before his honorable discharge on December 14, 1956. After his return he again helped his father on the farm and worked at Haldorson Hardware in Glenwood from 1957 – 1960 delivering soft water to homes in and around Lowry and Glenwood.

On June 17, 1961, David was united in marriage to Inez Husom at Glenwood Lutheran Church by Pastor John Spencer. They made their home on 6th Ave Southeast in Glenwood, where they raised their two sons, Michael and Steven. David was employed by Pope County for 32 years, from 1960 – 1970 in the Auditor’s office before being elected to the office of Pope County Treasurer in 1971, the office he held until his retirement in 1993.

From the time he was young, David loved baseball. His father would play ball with him in the evening after chores were done. He played on a number of local town teams including Glenwood, Starbuck, and Lowry. He was naturally a diehard Twins fan and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Dave and Inez also enjoyed attending local high school sports, especially basketball for many years. He was an active member at Glenwood Lutheran Church and in the Sons of Norway.  People often noted his positive, kind-heartedness and his pride in being a Norwegian-Lutheran.

In 2012, David and Inez sold their home and moved to Glenwood Plaza. In December of 2020, David’s health had declined to the point that he needed skilled nursing care so he was admitted to Glenwood Village Care Center. He enjoyed the staff there and having Inez close by to visit often. David passed away at the Care Center, peacefully, on the morning of Tuesday, June 8, 2021, following an enjoyable weekend of extensive visiting with his children and grandchildren.

David is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Inez Troen of Glenwood; his sons, Mike (Jill) of Glenwood, and Steve (Lisa) of White Bear Township; six grandchildren, Jessica (Jake), Andrew, Kayla, Joshua (Tori), Hunter, and Mia; his sister, Hannah (Karle) Erickson of Eden Prairie; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Magnus and Martha Troen, and also his brother, Benjamin Troen in 2009.
