Mildred Joffer Obituary

Mildred Joffer, 94, of Brooten died Saturday, August 10, 2019, at Glenwood Village Care Center. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 17th, at Brooten Community Church in Brooten, with Pastor Ron Knutson officiating. Inurnment in Bethany Cemetery will follow the service. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Brooten.

Mildred was born on December 25, 1924 in Corsica, South Dakota to Simon and Edith (Wolbrink) Plooster. She was the 7th of 8 children. She spent her childhood in the Corsica area helping on the family farm. During WWII, she moved with her sister Esther to California to find employment. She worked in an aircraft manufacturing plant building airplanes until she met her husband, Garrett, who was also from South Dakota. They married on January 31, 1945 in California. In 1948, they moved to southeastern South Dakota where they began dairy farming. In 1969, they moved to a dairy farm near Brooten. Mildred and Garrett shared 62 years of marriage before he died in 2007 at the age of 83. Mildred continued to live on the farm until May of 2018, when she became a resident at Glenwood Village Care Center.

Mildred had a very low key sarcastic sense of humor that came out once you got to know her. She was a dedicated and traditional mother and grandmother. She placed a high value on working hard to provide for the needs of her family. Mildred enjoyed both vegetable and flower gardening. She also loved to work on quilting projects, embroidery and reading. Most of all, she loved her grandchildren. She loved to see them, worried about them and made sure they had enough to eat when visiting.

Mildred is survived by her five children: Gary (Carol) of Brooten, Ron (Jessica) of Willmar, Judy (Jerry) Krebs of Braham, Carol (Greg) Gilborn of Ham Lake, and Melody Rust of Becker; 10 grandchildren: Jeff, Nick (Heather), Tony and Kyle Joffer, Brad and Brian Rust, Melissa Gartner, Jon and Josh (Zumara) Krebs and Jenni (Jon) Emerick; six great-grandchildren: Libby, Jonny and Sally Emerick and Eden, Jacob and Zophia Krebs; one sister, Everine Plooster of Azusa, CA; and in-laws: Helena (Harold) Lawrence of Sioux City, IA, Elsie Schmidt of Marion, SD, Chuck (Coral) Joffer of Parker, SD and Serena (George) Breza of Lavale, MD; along with nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garrett; 2 grandsons, Chris Joffer and Travis Eickholt; and 6 siblings, Lawrence, Esther Niewenhuis, Evelyn Meeter, Roy, Gilbert and Lester.
