Mary Ann Flolo Thompson, age 66, of Glenwood, MN, died peacefully on Monday, May 14, 2018, at home, surrounded by family and under the care of Glacial Ridge Hospice. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 19th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glenwood, with Fr. Joe Vandeberg officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. on Friday at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood, with parish prayers beginning at 7:00 P.M. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at a later date. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Mary Ann Flolo was born June 27, 1951 in Benson, MN, the daughter of Manuel and Lillian (Payne) Flolo. She grew up on a farm south of Benson in Cashel Township. Mary Ann was baptized and confirmed at Saint Bridgette’s Catholic Church in DeGraff, MN. She attended country school for 6 years in Cashel Township and was the only member of her class when she graduated from sixth grade. She graduated from Benson High School in 1969 where she was voted the friendliest girl in her class of 165 students.
Mary Ann started her collegiate career at the University of Minnesota in Morris, MN and finished at the University of Missouri in Saint Louis, MO. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and a Master’s Degree in Education at UMSL. Mary Ann first worked in Sales and Marketing for Stretch and Sew in Creve Coeur, MO. After earning her Master’s Mary Ann served as a business consultant for Boston Scientific, Medtronic, MCI, BNSF Railroad and Canadian Pacific Railway. Her business specialty was developing employee performance improvement programs.
Mary Ann was united in marriage to David E. Thompson at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, MN on November 6, 1971. They made their homes in Minneapolis, MN, Camargo, IL, St. Louis Park, MN, Creve Coeur, MO, Bedford, TX, Plymouth, MN and finally in Glenwood, MN. Throughout their marriage, Mary Ann and Dave had a love of dancing, starting out with disco in the 70’s and graduating to ballroom dancing after moving to Glenwood. Mary Ann was heavily involved in her kids' activates throughout her marriage. She served as a PTA President, Cub Scout leader, swimming competition judge, room mother, and more. After her grandchildren were born she thrived on her new role, traveling across the US to care for her grandchildren.
Mary Ann’s interest in sewing started in high school with a 40 year old Singer sewing machine and a first place win in the Make it with Wool contest at the Swift County Fair. She developed a passion for quilting and made beautiful quilts for gifts, room décor, tablecloths and commemorations.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Dave; her daughter, Aimee (Jonny) of Glenwood; and her son, Andrew (Shannon) of Vail, CO. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, River, Paisley and Cedar Thompson and Josiah Arevalo; along with her sister, Nancy Johnson of Bozeman, MT; three brothers, Charles (Maureen) and Donald (Barb), all of Glenwood, and Alan Flolo (Julie Thompson) of Colorado Springs, CO; as well as two very dear lifelong friends who also happened to be her cousins, Kathy Payne and Lois Nokleby; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents and brothers-in-law, Marlin and Donald Thompson.
Mary Ann will be remembered as a dedicated fitness instructor, a loving mother and grandmother and as a person with a strong faith in the Lord. May she rest in peace.
