She was raised on the family farm near Villard, with her brother, Leland, and two sisters, Bernice and Marian. On October 5, 1946, Joyce was united in marriage to Robert Jacobs in Nashua, Iowa, at the Little Brown Church, featured in the song "The Church in the Wildwood.” The two made their home on the shores of Lake Amelia where they owned and operated a mink ranch and farmed dairy cattle. Their marriage was blessed with four children, two sons, Robert Jr. and Kevin, and two daughters, Paula and Kimberly. Joyce and Robert later divorced. Robert died in 2000.
