Edward William Bryce, the son of William J. and Rosie (Havlik) Bryce, was born November 13, 1929, in Leven Township, Pope County, Minnesota. He grew up on a farm and attended school in Villard, where he graduated with the Class of 1947. Following high school he farmed for a few years on the home farm. On May 15, 1953, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as an Intelligence Analyst during the Korean Conflict. While on active duty, Ed contracted malaria. As a result, he was honorably discharged on March 21, 1955, and transferred to the Army Reserve to complete 8 years of active service.

On May 5, 1955, Ed was united in marriage to Valeria Buettner. The two made their home in Glenwood and their marriage was blessed with seven children. Ed and Valeria shared 32 years of marriage before her death on May 11, 1987. Ed eventually met Gwendolyn (Oliver) Plutowski and they were wed on July 16, 1988. Ed and Gwen made their home near Glenwood until five years ago, when they moved to Lakeshore Estates in Sauk Centre. The two shared 27 years together before Gwen’s death on January 1, 2016.

When Ed returned from the military, he worked for Jordahl Construction of Glenwood until 1961, when he got a job as a surveyor with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. He remained employed by the State of Minnesota for the next 28 years, until his retirement in 1989. He also farmed near Glenwood, raising both crops and livestock.

Ed was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glenwood and very devoted to his catholic faith and Mother Mary. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a church usher. When his children were young, he served as a 4-H leader and over his life he held various offices in Glenwood Township. He enjoyed gardening, solving Cryptoquip puzzles, camping, playing cards, square dancing, traveling, and spending winters in New Mexico.

Ed’s nature was one of generosity and selflessness. He passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at CentraCare Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, having lived to the age of 88 years. Blessed be his memory.

Ed is survived by his seven children, Kathleen (Marvin) Meyer of Atwater, Alan (Pat) Bryce of Glenwood, Daniel (Juana) Bryce of Altadena, CA, Diane Koubsky of Becker, Robert (Joyce) Bryce of Swanville, Carolyn (Lance) Olijnek of Lakeville, and Patricia (Babatunde Hassan) Dirie-Hassan of Fargo, ND; Gwen’s children: Joe & Jane; 26 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Gerald Terhaar; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Valeria and Gwendolyn; three sisters, Albena Ganske, Agnes McConville, and Rosie Terhaar; and two brothers, Robert Bryce and Walter Bryce.
