Bernice E. Miller, fka Bernice E. Hemstad, age 100, of Belgrade, and formerly of Dawson, MN, died Saturday, August 24, 2019, at the Belgrade Nursing Home. A memorial service celebrating Bernice's life will be held Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Brooten.
Bernice Elizabeth Miller, the 5th of 7 children born to Mary (Collins) and Edward Bogan was born February 25, 1919 in Montevideo, Minnesota.
In 1942, Bee married Maurice “Smear” Hemstad. The couple was blessed with 3 sons: Steve, Max and Reno. They raised their sons in Montevideo and worked in the family business, Hemstad’s Greenhouse. The two shared 19 years of marriage before Smear passed away in 1961.
Bee married Vern Miller in 1966 and they farmed in Baxter Township, Lac qui Parle County. In 1975, they moved to Dawson, MN. Vern worked at the local truck repair station and Bee was a homemaker and volunteer. They also had a cabin on Grove Lake that they enjoyed spending time at.
Bee loved to be active and had many hobbies. Bee and Vern traveled the lower 48 states and Canada and marched in many parades for the VFW. They also volunteered at the senior’s dining hall and school.She was also well known for telling jokes and having quick wit humor.
Bee passed away peacefully August 24th, 2019 at the amazing age of 100! She loved her friends and family and will forever be a role model for a life well lived.
Bee is survived by her son Max (Marcy) Hemstad of Montevideo, MN; daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Hemstad of Brooten; 4 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Bee is preceded in death by her parents; siblings; two sons, Steve and Reno; and grandson, Shane.
