Arla Underwood Obituary

Arla Underwood, age 82 of Brooten, died Friday, August 30, 2019 at home surrounded by family under the care of hospice. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 5th at Big Grove Lutheran Church in rural Belgrade. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten.

Arla Anita Underwood, daughter of Marvin and Norma (Galloway) Paulsen was born July 15, 1937 in Maquoketa, Iowa. She grew up on the family farm where she loved to help her dad with the farming. Arla attended school in Iowa where she enjoyed playing basketball. She graduated from Lost Nation High School in Lost Nation, IA. 

Arla worked various jobs before working for Gates Rubber Company in Illinois. She continued to work for the company and transferred to Denver, CO for a few years before being transferred back to Rockford, Illinois; where she met Aubrey “Bogie” Underwood. Arla was united in marriage to Bogie on March 10, 1967. In 1970, Arla and Bogie moved to Brooten, MN and started drilling irrigation wells. In 1978, they purchased Bogie’s Place and owned and operated it until 1988 when they retired. During this time, Arla also started “R” Salads and worked at the Glenwood Nursing Home in housekeeping. After retirement, Arla still kept busy working in Sedan, at the Apple Orchard, Rooster’s Bottle Shop along with working the food booth at auctions. Arla loved being around people and worked up until she was 80, when she had to stop due to her failing health. She enjoyed golfing and crocheting. She took many trips to the casino and to plays with her friends. Her most favorite trip was to West Point to see a great-nephew graduate. Arla especially enjoyed cat sitting and spending with her family and many friends. Arla passed away at home surrounded by her family under the care of hospice on August 30, 2019.

She is survived by her daughter, Karla (Brad) Sondrol of Watford City, ND; step-daughters: Roxane Underwood, Brenda Underwood and Audrey Watkins all of Rockford, IL; grandchildren: Anita (Matt) Clark, Nicole (Dylan Prestrud) Baalson, George (Ashley) Creviston, Daren (Alexis) Watkins and Corey Estes; great-grandchildren: Amelia and Oscar Clark, Lacey and Michael Croft, Briley, Aubrey and Trae Creviston, and Austin Estes; sister, Dorothy Hankemeier of Delmar, IA; brothers, Darrell Paulsen of Lost Nation, IA and Harlan Paulsen of Bradenton, FL; a special cat, Joe Moewer; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Arla was preceded in death by her husband, Bogie; granddaughter, Kristine and great-grandbaby; Baby P.
