Robert Greenfield Obituary

Robert Greenfield, age 85 of Margate, Florida, formerly Terrace, died Monday, February 26, 2025 at home under the care of his family and hospice. Service will be held at a later date.

Robert Owen Greenfield, a beacon of intelligence, passion, and generosity, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2024, in Margate, Florida, at the age of 85. Born on December 17, 1938, in St. Paul, Minnesota, he was the cherished son of Ole Martin Greenfield and Ruth Olive (Olson) Greenfield. Robert's life was a testament to his enduring commitment to education, community, and the love he shared with his beloved partner, Richard P. Grella, for over six decades.

Growing up in the close-knit community of Terrace, Minnesota, Robert attended local schools and was an active member of the Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church. His thirst for knowledge led him to Concordia in Moorhead, MN, where he graduated and went on to receive his master's degree in education and occupational therapy. This academic foundation paved the way for a distinguished career that touched the lives of countless individuals.

Robert's sense of duty and patriotism was evident when he entered the United States Army on April 17, 1962. During his service, he exhibited the same dedication and excellence that would characterize his later professional endeavors, receiving an honorable discharge on April 17, 1964. His career as an educator and occupational therapist spanned over three decades with the Hempstead Public Schools in New York, where his impact was both profound and enduring.

Upon retirement, Robert returned to his roots in Terrace, where he became the proud proprietor of the Terrace Mill restaurant. His entrepreneurial spirit was matched only by his commitment to his community. As an active member of the Terrace Mills Foundation, he was instrumental in the restoration and preservation of the town he so dearly loved. His engagement with the Sons of Norway reflected his respect for heritage and tradition, further deepening his ties to the community.

Robert shared his life with his devoted husband, Richard, and their bond was a source of inspiration to all who knew them. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and an open door to friends and family. He is survived by his loving husband; his sister, Donna Mae Sandmeyer; sister-in-law, Kathy Pagano; and a host of relatives and friends who were blessed to know him.

An individual of many talents, Robert found joy in painting, cooking, and gardening. His creativity was a delight to those around him, and his culinary skills were the highlight of many gatherings. A voracious reader, he was always ready to engage in thoughtful conversation or share a story. His ability to entertain friends with his big personality and easy charm will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.

Robert's life was a journey of contribution and connection. His intelligence was the foundation upon which he built his life's work, his passion was the fuel that drove his many endeavors, and his generosity was the gift that he freely gave to all. He left an indelible mark on his community and on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

In his passing, we bid farewell to a man who lived his life with purpose and joy. Robert Owen Greenfield's legacy is one of love, service, and the pursuit of knowledge, and it will continue to inspire and guide us. He has completed his journey on earth, but his spirit endures in the lives he touched and the memories he created. Rest in peace, Robert, knowing that your life was a well-lived adventure that enriched our world in countless ways.
