Philip J. McMahon

August 17, 1928 ~ September 28, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Philip McMahon, age 89 of Glenwood, died Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the Glenwood Retirement Village.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, October 2nd at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glenwood with Father Joe Vandeberg officiating.  Visitation will be Sunday, October 1st from 3:00 – 6:00 P.M. with Parish Prayers at 6:00 P.M. at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.  Visitation will also continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Glenwood.  Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. 

Philip John McMahon was born August 17, 1928 in Currie, Minnesota.  He was the son of John and Mary (Schreier) McMahon.  They lived on their family farm until 1937, when they moved to Currie. Philip graduated from high school in 1947. He joined the United States Air Force for active duty, serving his country, including 6 months in Germany. After his honorable discharge in 1950, he returned to Currie. Philip was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict in 1953.

Philip worked as a plaster. In 1957, he was appointed to the Minnesota Highway Patrol. He retired from the patrol in 1988, having served 30 years, 8 months; serving 30 of those years in the Glenwood Station.

In 1986, he was elected a Pope County Commissioner and served his county for 12 years. He was a member of the Glenwood American Legion and VFW. Philip enjoyed playing cards, fishing, storytelling, visiting, traveling and especially loved spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his two sons and three daughters. Daughter: Mary (John) Alston of Bozeman, MT and their families, Matthew Adams and Noble; Melissa Kemski and Thaddeus and Harrison; Killian and Christa Alston and Kylen and Bridger:  Son, Jim (Tammy Hasbargen) McMahon of Glenwood and their families; John and Jordan, and Tom: son, Mike (Cheree Anderson) McMahon of Starbuck and their families; Jayson and Amy Tilleskjor and Maci, Jeremy and Jenna Tilleskjor: Daughter, Nancy (Mark) Larkin of Delano, MN; and their families, John and Cameo, Steve, Connor and Amanda: Daughter, Julee (fiancé Andy Bell) Makela of Roseville, MN and their families, Tyler and Zachary Kloos.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary McMahon, Baby Boy John McMahon and Daughter in Law, Mary McMahon.
