Doris Lewis, age 92 of Brooten, died Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the Belgrade Nursing Home.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 29^th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Brooten and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.  Interment will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.  Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten.

Doris Elaine Lewis, the daughter of Elmer and Marie (Thompson) Nelson was born March 28, 1925, at home in Lake Johanna Township, rural Pope County, Minnesota.  In her early years, she attended Rolling Forks Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed.  She attended country school District #14 in Rolling Forks Township and Glenwood School where she graduated from the 8^th grade.  In 1940, her and her parents moved to a farm near Brooten where she went to high school.  Doris graduated from Brooten High School in 1944.  After graduation, she moved to Minneapolis and worked for Dayton’s.  She met Ellis Lewis and in 1946 they were married.  The couple made their home in Brooten where they lived the rest of their lives until Doris needed help with her daily care and entering the Belgrade Nursing Home in February 2017.  Doris and Ellis were blessed with six children. 

Doris worked at Kitchen Café, Kanne/Ziesmer Hardware and was a cook for the Brooten School District for 14 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she served on the church council, was a Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Teacher, belonged to the Ladies Aid and church quilters.  She was also a member of Brooten American Legion Post #288 Auxiliary for 48 years.

Doris loved to cook and seemed to always be cooking and baking something.  She will be remembered for her baked beans, rice custard dish and sheet cake brownies. Doris loved to embroider dish towel sets. She also loved to talk to people, either at church, someone’s home or on the telephone, catching up on the news.

Ellis and Doris were blessed having celebrated 71 years together; 6 children, 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Ellis Lewis of Brooten; sons: Dale (Rosie) Lewis, Donald Lewis, and Jon (fiancé, Jodi) Lewis; daughters, Helen Bjorge and Donna (Loren) Solbreken all of Brooten; grandchildren: Mashell Bjorge, Milissa Bjorge, Lonny (Dyana) Lewis, Tammie Krumm, Tracy (Stacey) Lewis, Ammie (Larry) Zachow, Daran (Lisa) Solbreken, Donovan (Mary) Solbreken, Brandon (fiancé, Morgan) Lewis, Jordan Lewis, Justin (Steph) Lewis, Sherry (Scott) Tschida and Vanessa (Emil) Trutwin; 18 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Ronald Dean Lewis and son-in-law, Kermit Bjorge.
